Student Pledge Events in Large Cities

Chicago

The Chicago Police Department, the Chicago Public Schools, Mayor Daley’s Office, and the schools in the Archdiocese have cooperated in putting the Student Pledge into Chicago’s schools. For the fourth time, radio station B96 is donating an hour of commercial-free time for a call-in show on gun violence. Guests on the show include: Mayor Richard Daley, Public Schools CEO, Paul Vallas; Illinois Attorney General, Jim Ryan; State Attorney Richard Devine; US Senators Richard Durbin and Peter Fitzgerald.

What: Mayor Anthony Williams, Police Chief Charles H. Atlanta area

The Atlanta area mobilization for the Student Pledge has been sponsored in part by the NAACP, United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, the Georgia PTA and the Atlanta Project. Bringing the Day of Concern into the wider community, a local mall will host educational forums, information booths, entertainment, and prize giveaways to foster increased public awareness and a focus on the Student Pledge.

New York City

The Student Pledge has been distributed throughout the NYC Public Schools. Dallas has put together a huge effort this year. One of the highlights available to press will be a school assembly where a MATV (Mother Against Teen Violence) representative will address the Peer Assistance/Leadership Class. A luncheon will honor the Day of Concern.

Richmond

In Richmond, Virginia, all 60 public schools will have the opportunity to plant daffodil bulbs, donated by Southern States Cooperative, to commemorate the lives of students lost in school shootings. Byrl Phillips Taylor, who lost a son due to gun violence, will speak at two Richmond schools on October 2lst. Mr. Gregory Carter, teacher and coach who was shot by a student on school grounds will also be speaking. Both elementary schools and public libraries will display books recommended for communicating with different age groups about gun violence.

Colorado Springs

Across Colorado, student councils are coordinating high school dances which will take place at the same time statewide in order to promote the Pledge. The press may visit Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, where a school-wide pledge signing will occur.

A US Department of Justice Weed & Seed site school will participate in a Student Pledge rally attended by Robbie, a canine purchased with Weed & Seed funds, and his officer, along with community police officers from the Houston Police Department.
