The Sixth Annual Day of National Concern About Young People and Gun Violence October 23, 2003 On October 23, in cities all over the country, millions of young people will come together and make a strong collective statement renouncing the violent use of guns. On that day, students will sign a simple, voluntary Pledge: "I promise that I will never carry a gun to school; I will never use a gun to settle a dispute; and I will use my influence with my friends to keep them from using guns to settle disputes. Last year, on the Day of National Concern, more than 2 million students signed the Pledge. The Day of National Concern has been supported for the last four years by Presidential Proclamation and Senate Resolution. This year's participating students will have the opportunity to be virtually connected via a ten-hour national web broadcast for and about teens :teenwebtalk.com . Young people can call in from now until the 17th to record a message or they can call in "live" on the 17th. To record a message before the 17th, call, toll-free, 1-877-531-TALK (8255), and on the Day of Concern call 1-877-532-TALK (8255). The Student Pledge Against Gun Violence has the strong support of the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the American Federation of Teachers, the National Association of Student Councils, the National School Boards Association, the National Education Association, and the National PTA and the endorsement of many other leading organizations. The signing of the Student Pledge Against Gun Violence is only a part of many Day of National Concern observances around the country. The Day of National Concern has been the occasion for school assemblies, radio call-in shows, Gubernatorial Proclamations, city-wide rallies, essay and poetry contests, as well as many conversations about gun violencebetween students and the adults they respect.
